The Valleys Project was initiated in with the aim of documenting the Valleys at a time when major changes were taking place in the region. The first three years of the project produced a significant body of work from photographers such as John Davies, Paul Reas and David Bailey.
Bailey was one of 10 photographers who took part in the Valleys Project – a unique undertaking by Ffotogallery, the national development agency for photography in Wales. During the five years of the project toit brought together the work of photographers resident in Wales and from further afield, to create a contemporary visual record and social commentary encompassing a broad geographical spread of the South Wales Valleys.
Photographers included David Bailey, John Davies, Peter Fraser, and Francesca Odell, among others. Works by a stellar collection of contemporary photographers make up the exhibition (Zhao Renhui, Alicia Bruce, Huw Davies, David Barnes, David Bailey, John Davies, Peter Fraser, Francesca Odell, Ron McCormick, to name but a few), and it is all threaded through with historical and vernacular accounts, presenting the many different facets of life in the David Bailey - part of the Valleys Project.
